My Journey to Becoming a Support Coordinator

At SEQ Disability Support, our work isn’t just about coordinating services—it’s about building trust, advocating for real change, and making a meaningful impact in people’s lives. For me, becoming a Support Coordinator wasn’t just a career move; it was a deeply personal decision shaped by my own experiences.

A Personal Connection to Disability

Before stepping into the disability sector, I worked in Human Resources—a role that allowed me to support and guide people in their professional journeys. But something deeper was calling me. My path changed forever when my husband was involved in a serious road accident that left him with a permanent spinal cord injury.

Living alongside a loved one with a disability opened my eyes to the realities of navigating the support system—the challenges, the frustrations, and the emotional toll it takes not just on the individual, but on their entire family.
I didn’t just witness the struggle; I lived it.

The Reality of Support Services

As my family adjusted to a new way of life, we encountered dozens of support workers who entered our home.
Some were agency on call staff—sent in for one shift and never seen again.
Others became an integral part of our household, forming strong relationships and providing consistent, meaningful support.

This experience taught me the value of genuine, person-centred care—but it also revealed gaps in the system. I saw what great support looks like, but I also saw the moments where empathy, respect, and consistency were missing.
It became clear to me that the difference between a frustrating experience and a truly supportive one comes down to the people coordinating the care.

Working in the Disability Sector

My professional journey eventually led me to work alongside incredible support workers and service providers in the disability sector. I saw firsthand the dedication of those who genuinely care—but I also saw where the system failed individuals and their families.

Families were overwhelmed, confused by NDIS processes, struggling to find reliable services, and feeling unheard. That’s when I realised I wanted to do more. I wanted to bridge the gap between individuals and the support they deserve.

Why I Chose Support Coordination

I became a Support Coordinator because I want to be that person who listens, understands, and advocates for the people who need it most.

  • I know what it’s like to feel lost in the system.
  • I know the difference that the right support can make.
  • I know that true support coordination is more than just organising services—it’s about empowering people to live their best lives.

Honesty, ethical practices, and person-centred values are the foundation upon which I’ve built SEQ Disability Support. This is not just a business—it’s a mission to ensure that every person we work with feels heard, respected, and fully supported.
